Sexing Error Policy

Intent

To ensure that producers are provided the opportunity to produce hatching eggs from the total number of hens allocated to them on their placement date (excluding any frees).

Policy Features

  1. Hatching egg producers are provided 2% extra day-old female chicks to compensate for errors in sexing the birds at time of hatch. When the number of brothers in a female breeder placement exceeds this 2%, the producer will be granted the opportunity to replace 100% of mis-sexed birds.
  2. The following replacement options will apply:
    1. The producer may place the mis-sexed number of birds within the next three scheduled placements.
    2. A delayed placement credit will be granted treating the sexing error similar to a placement shortage (see Policies Appendix).
    3. A producer must first place the number of quota birds allocated to a placement date. Extras, due to policy adjustments, may be added provided the 1.8 square foot per bird space requirement is maintained.
    4. If a producer's total allocation for a scheduled placement date exceeds the barn capacity, a producer may place the excess number of birds over their next three placement dates. If preferred, a producer my lease out (lessor) the excess number of birds to another licensed producer (lessee) within 26 weeks of the lessor's placement date.

Policy Requirements

  • Sexing error claims must be submitted on the Alberta Hatching Egg Producers Sexing Error Claim Form within 32 weeks of the placement date. Beyond this period, claims will not be accepted.
