Early Mortality Policy
Intent
To ensure that producers are provided the opportunity to produce hatching eggs from the total number of hens allocated to them (excluding 4% frees) on their placement date.
Policy Features
- When mortality in a breeder placement exceeds 4% within the first fourteen days from the placement date, the producer will be granted the opportunity to replace 100% of the lost birds.
- When replacement cannot be accommodated within the same flock, the following options will apply:
- The producer may place the lost number of birds within the next three scheduled placements.
- A delayed placement credit will be granted treating the mortality similar to a placement shortage (see Policies Appendix)
- A producer must first place the number of quota birds allocated to a placement date. Extras, due to policy adjustments, may be added provided the 1.8 square foot per bird space requirement is maintained.
- If a producer’s total allocation for a scheduled placement date exceeds the barn capacity, a producer may place the excess number of birds over their next three placement dates. If preferred, a producer my lease out (lessor) the excess number of birds to another licensed producer (lessee) within 26 weeks of the lessor’s placement date (see Lease Policy)
Policy Requirements
- Early mortality claims must be submitted on the Alberta Hatching Egg Producers Early Mortality Claim Form within six (6) weeks of the placement date. Beyond this period, claims will not be accepted.
- The hatchery and/or veterinarian must verify the loss and provide the cause of mortality to the AHEP board office.
